LOGS 3.0 introduces a range of technical improvements allowing enhanced customization options and an all-new Inventory feature. In this latest version, we’ve updated our platform to better serve our users, bringing in flexibility, a fresh look, and improved tools for managing your research data.
What’s New in LOGS 3.0
- New Branding: Experience the SciY magenta and an updated look.
- Custom Fields and Types: Fully customizable core entities allowing more flexibility for metadata addition.
- Inventory Feature: Manage assets, documents, and storage in a centralized, easy-to-navigate system.
- Metadata Mapping Templates: Assign Projects and Sample names based on predefined directory structures, parameters and more.
New Branding, Same Powerful LOGS
If you’ve noticed something different, it’s the color! LOGS has transitioned from its familiar blue to SciY’s signature magenta, marking its integration into the SciY brand (sciy.com). This change reflects a deeper affiliation with SciY’s vendor-agnostic software ecosystem. Beyond the color change, this update also enable LOGS to integrate with other SciY platforms such as Mestrelab’s Mnova (https://mestrelab.com/).
More Customization: Custom Fields and Types
With LOGS 3.0, customization just got easier for everyone. Admins can now extend standard LOGS entities (Projects, Samples, and Datasets) by adding a variety of custom fields to create entity types. This allows you to tailor LOGS to your unique workflow, no matter your setup. Before you ask, dedicated search and filter options for custom fields are already in the pipeline and will be released in the next version.
Already using LOGS? Don’t worry—the system will automatically migrate your old entities into the new, customizable format. Need help? Our support team is ready to assist with further customization of this migration at [email protected].

Introducing Inventory: Centralize and Optimize Your Lab Storage
The standout feature of this release is our new Inventory module. Now, you can quickly view and search your entire asset inventory across your lab. Whether it’s sample storage or document management, Inventory offers a bird’s-eye view of your lab’s composition, helping you stay organized and efficient. One powerful aspect of Inventory is its ability to support hierarchical entries, allowing you to build an organized structure that mirrors your laboratory’s layout. Existing assets, such as Sample Storage and Documents, will be seamlessly migrated into this new system.

Metadata Mapping Templates
To ensure data is findable and reproducible, it must include sufficient contextual information, often readily available on your instrument PC. LOGS can automatically extract this metadata—such as details about persons, projects, and samples—and map it to the appropriate LOGS fields, whether they are standard or newly created custom fields. Metadata sources can include folder names, path information, dataset titles, parameters, and scripted inputs.
LOGS now offers templates for Metadata Mapping (formerly known as Custom Import). These templates are designed to accommodate various standard organizational setups and can be easily tailored to fit your specific requirements on request.

Further Additions and Fixes
We’ve also made improvements and adjustments, including:
- Sample Tags Migrated to Custom Fields: Existing sample tags have been seamlessly migrated into the new custom fields system
- Documents Integrated into Inventory: as mentioned above, Documents are now part of the new Inventory system for better management.
- Sample Storage: This feature is now a hierarchical component within the Inventory module, allowing for more detailed organization.
- Update Time: This release includes significant improvements for all LOGS entities. The migration may take some time, especially for larger databases, so we recommend performing the update overnight.
- New Dataset-ID: The old Datatset-ID with the # will be replaced by the new Dataset-ID concept, the #number will no longer be assigned to datasets but is still visible in LOGS
- Notebook URL: change in URL for notebook entries from name.logs-repository.com/group/eln/ to name.logs-repository.com/group/notebook/
- SFTP Proxy Functionality: the SFTP forwarding has been discontinued
- Automatic Data Upload: the code for data upload via SFTP was rewritten, as a safety feature all uploads are switched off and need to be reactivated manually under More:DataSource select the Data Source and click “Edit”, switch on the Enabled toggle.
- Data Upload using Icon NMR: If you are using Icon NMR, the automatic data upload needs to be reconfigured. For detailed instructions see here (link to documentation).
- Bruker NMR Monitoring Feature: This feature has been disabled
- Bruker NMR Topspin Plugin: The plugin has been discontinued.
